消失 Shōshitsu – In between

Hardly any other place in the world is torn between tradition and innovation as much as Okinawa. The west has long abandoned its traditions – its legacy – in favor of constant economic growth and expansion. Everything is made to be as fast and cheap as possible and be thrown away the moment its warranty expires. Ancient cultural origins seem to be no longer an object of the present everyday life. But what will remain?

Just as rapidly changing are the cityscapes in Okinawa with new office buildings, newly constructed malls or factories being erected. Yet this small island manages to uphold century old traditions that are especially re- flected in its craftsmanship. It seems to be more than just maintaining the con- ventions and accustomed folkways. It is the only way of staying connected with cultural origin and ancestry. Yet there are some ancient crafts which are steadely disappearing from the field of vision of their own people.

In my photographic work I want to capture Okinawas dedicated and extensive artistry and point out that its craftsmanship embodies quality and sustainment of culture and identity. An homage to the Ryukyu craftsmanship and the lon- gevity of a handmade legacy.
